Established in 1962 and originally part of the University of Virginia’s School of General Studies, the college became an independent two-year institution in 1964 and joined the Virginia Community College System in 1971. In 2021, the college’s name was changed to Patrick & Henry Community College to honor the counties it serves, moving away from the association with Patrick Henry.
