SAT: Prohibited Devices You Should Never Bring on Test Day

When preparing for the SAT, knowing what to bring is just as important as what not to bring. The College Board has strict rules about prohibited devices to maintain test security and fairness. Bringing any banned item can lead to disqualification or your scores being canceled.

1. Cell Phones and Smart Devices

  • No cell phones, smartphones, or smartwatches are allowed in the testing room.
  • Even if your phone is turned off or in airplane mode, it cannot be accessible during the test.
  • Phones must be turned off and stored away in a locker or with your belongings outside the testing room.

Why? These devices can be used to cheat or share test content, which is strictly prohibited.

2. Calculators That Are Not Allowed

  • Calculators with QWERTY keyboards (like some scientific calculators with letter keys arranged like a computer keyboard) are banned.
  • Calculators that connect to the internet, have built-in computer algebra systems (CAS), or have wireless capabilities are prohibited.
  • Examples of banned calculators include:
    • TI-Nspire CX CAS
    • HP Prime
    • Casio ClassPad series

Only approved calculators are permitted, and some tests now include a built-in calculator, so check the latest guidelines before test day.

3. Smartwatches and Fitness Trackers

  • Smartwatches or fitness trackers that can connect to the internet, store text, or have a camera or audio recording function are banned.
  • Regular analog or digital watches without advanced features are generally allowed but cannot be worn on your wrist during the test.

4. Electronic Dictionaries or Translation Devices

  • These devices are not allowed under any circumstances.
  • Bringing an electronic dictionary or translator can result in immediate disqualification.

5. Audio Devices

  • Headphones, earbuds, or any devices that allow you to listen to music or communicate are prohibited.
  • The only exception is for approved testing accommodations, where specific audio devices may be permitted.

6. Cameras and Recording Devices

  • Cameras, video recorders, or any device capable of capturing images or video are strictly banned inside the testing room.

7. Other Electronic Devices

  • Any other electronic gadgets not explicitly permitted by the College Board should be left at home. This includes items like tablets, laptops (unless used for approved accommodations), and electronic games.

What Happens If You Bring a Prohibited Device?

  • Your test may be immediately canceled.
  • Your scores might be invalidated, and you could face disciplinary actions, including being banned from future College Board exams.
  • The test center staff will typically ask you to store your devices outside the testing room, but bringing prohibited items at all puts you at risk.

Tips to Avoid Issues on Test Day

  • Double-check the College Board’s current prohibited devices list before test day.
  • Leave all electronic devices at home or in a safe location outside the test room.
  • Use only approved calculators or rely on built-in calculator tools if provided.
  • Bring a traditional analog watch if you want to keep track of time (but confirm the testing center rules).
  • If you’re unsure about any device, consult your school test coordinator or the College Board’s website.
