Student Search Service and the SAT: What It Is and Why It Matters
When you take the SAT, you’re not just testing your academic skills—you’re opening the door to opportunities. One of the lesser-known but highly valuable tools offered by the College Board is the Student Search Service®. If you’re a student (or a parent helping one prepare for college), understanding this service can give you a real edge in the college admissions and scholarship process.
Here’s a clear breakdown of what the Student Search Service is, how it works, and why opting in can be a smart move.
What Is the Student Search Service?
Student Search Service® is a free program offered by the College Board that connects students who take the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and other College Board assessments with colleges, universities, scholarship programs, and educational organizations that match their interests and academic background.
When you opt in, colleges and programs can see non-score information (like GPA range, intended major, and geographic area) and use that to reach out to students who might be a good fit for their institutions.
What Kind of Information Is Shared?
Important: Your SAT scores are not shared with colleges through Student Search Service.
What can be shared includes:
- Name and contact information, High school and graduation year, Intended major or career interest, Grade point average (GPA) range, Activities and preferences, Geographic location
This data helps colleges find students they might not otherwise reach, especially those from underrepresented or rural communities.
Why Should You Opt In?
More College Opportunities: Colleges looking to increase diversity or fill programs often use Student Search Service to find students. You could hear from schools you hadn’t even considered—but that are a great match for you.
Scholarship Matches: Many scholarship providers use this service to identify eligible students. Just opting in could make you eligible to receive information about scholarships worth thousands of dollars.
Customized Outreach: Colleges often send personalized information, including application fee waivers, early invitations to campus events, or early admission opportunities.
It’s Free and Optional: There’s no cost to participate, and you can opt out at any time if you change your mind.
When Do You Sign Up?
You’ll be asked during SAT registration if you want to opt into the Student Search Service. You can also update your participation later by logging into your College Board account.
Is It Safe?
Yes. The College Board does not sell your personal data, and participating organizations must follow strict privacy and data use rules. Only approved institutions and programs that meet College Board guidelines can access your information.
What If You Opt Out?
If you choose not to participate:
- You won’t receive outreach from colleges and programs via the service.
- You’ll still be able to send your SAT scores to colleges on your own.
- You won’t miss out on applying to schools—but you might miss the chance to discover new ones that are a great fit.
Student Search Service and SAT
The Student Search Service is a powerful and completely free tool that gives students access to more college and scholarship opportunities without sharing sensitive information like SAT scores. It’s especially useful if you’re just starting to explore your college options—or want to be found by schools looking for students like you.
Tip: Opt in when registering for the SAT or PSAT. You’ve got nothing to lose—and potentially a lot to gain.
